Radio Violeta

In 2020 the Guatemalan artist Sophia Arrazola and I founded a collective of female artists dedicated to participatory community murals in Mexico City. Our favorite project thus far was with a local feminist radio station, located in a residential neighborhood, who invited us to paint their facade.

We began by conducting workshops with women from the station and neighbors we met by knocking on doors. The workshops focused on envisioning a safer, more powerful and inclusive future in a country where there’s an average of 10 femicides a day.

We took the letters and stories that we gathered from the workshops and distilled in into eight key themes. Using colors that the participants had decided on, we turned these themes into graphic symbols that would make up the mural.

The community showed up to help us paint the mural, and along the way we had many interesting conversations with other neighbors passing by who hadn’t know there was a feminist radio station down the street from them.
